| Sprinter, born in Clarksville, Tennessee, USA. He set world records for both the 220 yd and the 200 m in 1966, and was a member of the US team which broke the world record for the 4 × 400 m relay. In the 1968 Olympics at Mexico City he won the gold medal in the 200 m in a world record time of 19·8 s, but caused considerable controversy by giving the Black Power salute while standing on the victor's rostrum. After retirement, he became a coach at Santa Monica College, CA, and then at Oberlin College, OH. |
