| Poet, born in Matera, Basilicata, S Italy. He wrote Il mondo nuovo (1617) about the discovery of America. In the treatise Dell'occhiale (1627) he criticized Giambattista Marino's Adone for its excessive Baroque style, thus causing outrage among the poet's followers. He also wrote a Canzoniere (1605, 1623) in a Petrarca-inspired style. |
