| Footballer, born in Kraków, Poland. He began his career at age 14 with KS Halniak, and progressed to play for a number of first division clubs in Poland. Moving to Germany, from 1997 he enjoyed success with Duisburg, but the German Cup runners-up found themselves relegated to the second division at the end of the 2000 season and he moved to Schalke 04, where he has developed into one of the best defenders in the Bundesliga (German Football League). He is also regarded as a throw-in specialist capable of propelling the ball up to 35 metres from the touchline. Dropped from the Polish national team in 2000, he won his place back after a series of first-class performances with his new club, Schalke. |
