| biography:
| Librettist, born in Madrid, Spain. Popular librettist for the género chico in the tradition created by Ramón de la Cruz, his first sainete was Cuadros al fresco, first performed at the Teatro Lope de Rueda in 1870. This was followed by many other libretti, particularly on the manners of Madrid, using shops, squares, and cafés as the settings for a lively display of typical madrileño word-play. His plays, selected in Teatro escogido (1894), dealt in mildly satirical fashion with bullfighting, the lottery, the flamenco fanatics, political hangers-on, and all the easy targets of city life. Active in the golden age of the género chico which coincided with the activity of Ricardo de la Vega and Javier de Burgos, he is still remembered for La fiesta nacional (1882), Los lunes de ‘El Imparcial’ (1894), and La niña del estanquero (1897). |
