| biography:
| Flemish novelist, poet, and performer, born in Sint-Niklaas, N Belgium. Generally regarded as the most influential contemporary performing poet, in his performances he explicitly places himself in the ancient oral tradition. His novels, poems, and shows are typified by his strong rhetorical ability, sharp sense of humour, and self-mockery. He made his breakthrough with Een slagerszoon met een brilletje (1985, A Butcher's Son with Glasses), a collection of stories with grotesque and autobiographical elements. Together with Brusselmans, he wrote the theatre play De Canadese Muur (1989, The Canadian Wall). |
