| Film actor, born in Oakland, California, USA. He studied at the California State University, Sacramento, where he worked as stage manager and actor in university productions. He spent three seasons performing the classics with the Great Lakes Shakespeare Festival in Ohio before making his film debut in the thriller He Knows You're Alone (1981). After some well received television comedy, he was cast in the film Splash (1984), and received an Oscar nomination for his role in Big (1988). He gained an Oscar and Golden Globe Award for his character performance as an AIDS victim in Philadelphia Story (1993), and another Oscar for Forrest Gump (1994). Later films include Saving Private Ryan (1998), The Green Mile (1999), Cast Away (2000, Golden Globe), and Catch Me If You Can (2002). He made his directorial debut in 1996 with That Thing You Do!, and in 2001 he collaborated with Steven Spielberg on the TV mini-series Band of Brothers (Golden Globe, Emmy). |
