| Actor, director, and poet, born in Edinburgh, EC Scotland, UK. After co-founding the Gateway Theatre, Edinburgh (1953–62), where he worked as actor and director, he joined the Royal Shakespeare Company. In 1965 he was appointed the first director of the Edinburgh Civic Theatre Trust, and founded a new company at the Royal Lyceum Theatre in the city. He has subsequently appeared as an actor and director in many Scottish theatres. His books of poetry include So That Was Spring (1954) and Sax Roses for a Luve Frae Hame (1961). He has also been a radio and television commentator since 1952, specializing in state and royal events, most notably the funeral service of Diana, Princess of Wales (1998). In 1998 he published A Scottish Childhood. |
