| Film actor, born in Syracuse, New York, USA. After an itinerant childhood, his plans for a professional wrestling career were abandoned through injury. He tried his hand at acting, struggling through night classes and auditions, and went on to make many successful films including Top Gun (1985), Rain Man (1988), Days of Thunder (1990), A Few Good Men (1992), The Firm (1993), and Interview with the Vampire (1995). He received Golden Globe Awards and Oscar nominations for best actor for both Born on the Fourth of July (1989) and Jerry Maguire (1996). In 1999 he co-starred with his wife, Nicole Kidman (divorced, 2001), in Eyes Wide Shut. Later films include Magnolia (1999), Mission Impossible 2 (2000), Vanilla Sky (2001), and Minority Report (2002). |
