| Actor and director, born in Paisley, Renfrewshire, W Scotland, UK. He studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music, made his acting debut in 1960, and has since performed and directed regularly in London theatres. Television appearances include The Norman Conquests and Glittering Prizes, and among his films are Galileo (1974), Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence (1982), Shirley Valentine (1989), and Don't Go Breaking My Heart (1998). He was voted Best Stage Actor by the Variety Club of Great Britain in 1978, and he received a Tony Award for Best Actor in 1979. Later theatre productions include Chapter Two (1996) and Jesus My Boy (1998). |
