| Strip cartoonist, illustrator, and painter, born in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, C England, UK. With his creation of Weary Willie and Tired Tim, he became known as ‘the father of British comic style’. Moving to London, he quickly became a popular cartoonist for magazines, posters, and picture postcards. When Comic Cuts was launched (1890), his bold linear style proved perfect for cheap reproduction, and he was soon drawing front pages for several comics a week. |
