| biography:
| Poet, born in Rotterdam, W Netherlands. His early work was sentimental, in imitation of Rhijnvis Feith, but he soon began to write poetry with domestic subjects, celebrating the joys of family life. This poetry, together with his later patriotic poems, became immensely popular. His most famous poem, Tafereel van de overwintering der Hollanders of Nova Zembla (1819, Tableau of the Wintering of the Dutch on Novaya Zemyla), won a gold award in a national poetry competition. He received many other prizes and awards during his lifetime, but later was viewed less favourably by the critiques of C Busken Huet in the 1860s. From a historical point of view, his work is exemplary for reflecting contemporary thought in The Netherlands in the first half of the 19th-c. |
