| Jurist, born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. A professor of international law at the University of Amsterdam (1862–93), he was a founder of the Institute of International Law in 1873. In 1911 he shared the Nobel Peace Prize with the Austrian pacifist Alfred Fried for his work in creating the Permanent Court of Arbitration at the Hague Peace Conference of 1899. |
