| biography:
| Economist, born in ’s Graveland, The Netherlands. He studied at Utrecht and Leyden, worked at the League of Nations in Geneva (1936–40), then emigrated to the USA (1940) and worked for a shipping firm, devising a system to optimize transport costs. He became a US citizen in 1946. He was professor of economics at Chicago (1948–55) and Yale (1955–81), and shared the 1975 Nobel Prize for Economics for his contributions to the theory of optimal allocation of resources. |
