| biography:
| Sultan of Mysore (1782–99), born in Devanhalli, S India, the son of Haidar Ali. He continued his father's policy of opposing British rule, and in 1789 invaded the British-protected state of Travancore. In the ensuing war (1790–2) he was defeated by Cornwallis, and had to cede half his kingdom. After recommencing hostilities in 1799, he was killed during the siege of Seringapatam. |
