| Writer, born in Scarborough, Perth, Western Australia, Australia. Educated at the University of Western Australia, he jointly won the Australian–Vogel award in 1981 with his first novel An Open Swimmer. He has twice won the Miles Franklin Award - for Shallows (1984) and the epic Australian novel Cloudstreet (1991), which also won the British Deo Gloria award. Later novels include The Riders (1994) and Blueback (1998), and he has also published several books for children. |
