| biography:
| Roman statesman. In 137 he served as quaestor in Spain, where his influence enabled him to save an entire Roman army from destruction by the Numantines. He was concerned at the lack of manpower for the army, traditionally recruited from land-owning peasants, and having been elected tribune in 134, proposed reforms to extend land-ownership among the poor. His measures were strongly disapproved of by wealthy land-owners and he was assassinated while trying to gain re-election as tribune. |
