| biography:
| Roman statesman. After the murder of his brother Tiberius Gracchus, he returned to Rome and was elected to the tribuneship in 123 and 122 BC. He renewed his brother's agrarian law and took other measures to control abuses by those in power. By a senatorial intrigue he was rejected from a third tribuneship, and the Senate began to repeal his enactments. He led an illegal demonstration, and a riot ensued in which many of his supporters were slain, and he committed suicide. Much of his legislation survived, and his ideals influenced reforms proposed in the last century of the republic. |
