| Athenian general. A strenuous supporter of the democracy, in 411 BC he helped to overthrow the Four Hundred, and was responsible for the recall of Alcibiades. In that year he defeated the Spartans in naval battles at Cynossema, and at Cyzicus in 410 BC. In 404 BC he was banished by the Thirty Tyrants, but restored the democracy in 403 BC by seizing Piraeus. He conquered Lesbos and defended Rhodes, but was slain in 388 BC at Aspendus. |
