| Swimmer, born in Paddington, Sydney, Australia. A swimming phenomenon, he began swimming aged eight and won his first competition the following year. In the 1998 World Championships he became the youngest male world champion in history by winning the 400 m freestyle. At the Pan Pacific Championships in 1999 he smashed four world records in four days. He won four gold medals at the Kuala Lumpur 1998 Commonwealth Games, and two gold medals at the 1998 World Swimming Championships. At the 2000 Sydney Olympics he won five medals, including three gold, and at the 2001 World Championships in Japan he won six gold medals. At the 2002 Manchester Commonweath Games he won a total of seven medals, six gold and a silver. His individual world records include the 200 m freestyle (1:44·06), the 400 m freestyle (3:40·17), and the 800 m freestyle (7:39·16). |
