| biography:
| Scholar and antiquary, from Iceland. He studied at the University in Copenhagen, where he became professor, and in 1791 was appointed keeper of the secret Danish archives. The first editor of the Anglo-Saxon epic Beowulf, which he found in the British Museum in London, his transcript was destroyed during the British bombardment of Copenhagen in 1807, but he re-published it in 1815. |
