| biography:
| Explorer, and colonizer of ‘Vínland’ (Wineland, North America). Around the year 1000 he led an expedition of would-be colonists from Greenland, which sailed along the NE coasts of North America and attempted to found a Norse colony in an area called Vínland, somewhere in the vicinity of Newfoundland. The venture was abandoned after three years because of hostility from the native Indians. The story is told in two Icelandic sagas, Eiriks saga and Groenlendinga saga. |
