| Athlete, born in London, UK. An outstanding decathlete, his first major honour was in the 1978 Commonwealth Games, which he retained in 1982 and 1986. He was world champion (1983), European champion (1982, 1986), and Olympic champion (1980, 1984). He broke the world record four times between 1980 and 1984. Having suffered from injuries, he announced his retirement in 1992. |
