| biography:
| Clergyman, born in Ballyclough, Co Cork, S Ireland. He studied at Paris and Rome, and is said to have fought at the barricades during the 1848 Revolution. A close friend of Cardinal Manning, he became Roman Catholic Bishop of Auckland, New Zealand (1870). In 1875 he was promoted Archbishop of Cashel and Emly. A strong nationalist, he backed the Gaelic League and the Land League. Croke Park in Dublin is named after him. |
