| biography:
| US soldier, born in Newport, Rhode Island, USA. The Civil War's ‘other Sherman’, he was a West Point graduate (1836) who fought in Florida, the Mexican War, and on the frontier. A stern disciplinarian and thus unpopular with Civil War volunteer troops, he commanded the Port Royal, South Carolina expedition (1861) and afterwards fought in Mississippi and Louisiana, where he lost a leg in action at Port Hudson (1863). |
