| Clockmaker, born in Northill, Bedfordshire, SC England, UK, acknowledged as the greatest English maker. He was admitted to the London Clockmakers' Company in 1671, and became Master of the Company in 1703. In 1676 he was appointed clockmaker to the newly-opened Royal Observatory. His craftsmanship and scientific knowledge enabled him to make watches, table clocks, and long-case clocks with greatly improved time-keeping. He made one of the first English watches equipped with a balance spring (1675), and patented the cylinder escapement (1695). |
