| Revolutionary soldier and US political leader, born near Charlottesville, Virginia, USA. He opposed the British under Tarleton in South Carolina, was defeated at Fishing Creek, but gained a victory at Blackstock Hill (1780). In 1789 he became a member of the US House of Representatives, and later of the US Senate (1801–10). Fort Sumter was named after him. |
