| Painter, born in Horncastle, Lincolnshire, E England, UK. He and his family emigrated to Charleston, SC, in 1792. He received art instruction from family members and in 1807 began a portrait-painting career in Richmond and Norfolk, VA. He worked with Gilbert Stuart in Boston, moved to Philadelphia, and studied with Benjamin West in London. Returning to Philadelphia in 1810, he painted technically polished and elegant portraits, as in ‘Fanny Kemble as Beatrice’ (1833), and was often compared to Gilbert Stuart. |
