With John Hopkins (d.1570) he wrote the English version of psalms formerly attached to the Prayer Book. The complete book of psalms, which appeared in 1562, formed for nearly two centuries almost the whole hymnody of the Church of England and was known as the ‘Old Version’ after the rival version of Nahum Tate and Nicholas Brady appeared in 1696. Forty psalms bore the name of Sternhold. |
