| Cyclist, born in Easington, Durham, NE England, UK. In 1962 he became the first Briton ever to wear the leader's yellow jersey in the Tour de France. Known as Major Tom to the French, he led the race for just one day. During the 1967 Tour de France he died from heart failure while riding the 13th stage, the climb of Mont Ventoux. A memorial stone was built near the spot where he died. |
