| Irish nationalist politician, born in Ballygannon, Co Waterford, S Ireland. He worked as a railway clerk before becoming leader-writer on the Nation. He was elected MP for Sligo as Home Rule supporter of Parnell in 1880, captured West Belfast in 1886, and was defeated there in 1892 after the Parnell split. Lord Mayor of Dublin (1888–9), he became MP for Kerry North (1892–6). He controlled the leading Home Rule daily newspaper, the Freeman's Journal, from 1892 to 1912. |
