| Engineer, born in Broadstairs, Kent, SE England, UK. He was a pioneer of locomotive construction, and was responsible for the first successful cross-channel submarine cable, between Dover and Calais, in 1851. He built the Berlin waterworks (1855), and many railway systems. |
