| biography:
| Novelist, born in Glen Cove, New York, USA. He studied at Cornell, then worked as a technical writer for Boeing before leaving to write fiction. His novels, such as V (1963), The Crying of Lot 49 (1966), Gravity's Rainbow (1973, National Book Award), and Vineland (1992) all display a preoccupation with codes, quests, and coincidences that determines the form of the narrative. Later works include Mason and Dixon (1997). An experimentalist, esoteric and elusive, his books largely abandon the normal conventions of the novel. He has also written several short stories, published in Slow Learner (1984), which also contains a revealing essay on his acknowledged influences. |
