| Biochemist, born in Chicago, Illinois, USA. At the University of Colorado (1977– ) he showed that RNA could have an independent catalytic function aiding a chemical reaction without being consumed or changed. This had major implications for genetic engineering, as well as for understanding how life arose. He and Sidney Altman shared the 1989 Nobel Prize for Chemistry. |
