| biography:
| Painter, born in Newport, Kentucky, USA. He studied at the National Academy of Design in New York (1871), then worked with Thomas Eakins at the Pennsylvania Academy of Design (1876), and later joined the staff. His paintings, such as ‘Steelworkers Noontime’ (c.1884), reveal his study of anatomy and geometric design, and his populist subject matter. He influenced many pupils, including Robert Henri, Charles Demuth, and John Sloan. |
