| Physician, born in St Leonard, Maryland, USA. In 1926, as chief of the division of venereal diseases in the US Public Health Service, he laid the foundation for his campaign while surgeon general (1936–48) against syphilis and other social diseases. He established and was dean of the graduate school of public health, University of Pittsburgh (1948–58), and he co-founded the World Health Organization. |
