| Writer and diplomat, born in Hanover Co, Virginia, USA. He studied at Washington College (Lexington, VA) (1869–72) and the University of Virginia (1873–4 LLB), then practised law in Richmond, VA (1874–93). As a writer he produced sentimental Southern dialect stories, such as In Ole Virginia; or, Marse Chan and Other Stories (1887), and also wrote novels, essays, biographies, and children's books, all set in the South before and after the Civil War. He served as US ambassador to Italy (1913–19), but spent most of his life in Virginia. |
