| Protestant missionary and colonist, born in Wiltshire, S England, UK. He settled in Medford, MA before 1632 and purchased Martha's Vineyard (1641), establishing his son as head of a colony there. After his son was lost at sea (1657), he continued and expanded his son's missionary work among the Indians, and as governor of Martha's Vineyard was a benevolent dictator. A grandson succeeded him as missionary and chief magistrate of the island. |
