| Austrian statesman and president (1992– ), born in Vienna, Austria. Educated at Vienna University, he entered the Austrian foreign service and served in Paris (1959–62), Washington (1962–6), and Los Angeles (1969–74). He acted as secretary to the Austrian chancellor (1966–9) and was later the country's permanent representative to the UN (1978–82) and ambassador to the USA (1982–7). He held the post of foreign secretary (1987–92) before becoming president. |
