| Irish nationalist and revolutionary, born in Hurst Castle, Isle of Wight, S England, UK. At 21 he emigrated to the USA, where he became involved in Clan-na-Gael, the clandestine US wing of the Irish Republican Brotherhood, promoting anti-British action. Sent to England in 1883, he was arrested for participation in the dynamite campaign against London civilians and was sentenced to penal servitude for life. Released in 1898, he spent some years in the USA, returning to Ireland in 1907. At his urging, the Irish Republican Brotherhood set up a military council, which brought about the Easter Rising of 1916. After the surrender he was court-martialled and shot. |
