| Film producer, director, screenwriter, and actor, born in Newport, Rhode Island, USA. He made his stage debut at age six, and later appeared on Broadway and in films. In 1910 he began directing Mary Pickford films. He used detailed, tightly structured scripts, which he often wrote himself, and by 1916 devoted himself to producing and writing. He is best remembered for Custer's Last Fight (1912), Civilization (1916), and Human Wreckage (1923). |
