| Philanthropist, born in London, UK. He began business in 1668 as a bookseller, and then became a printer of Bibles, amassing a fortune of nearly half a million pounds. In 1707 he built and furnished three wards of St Thomas' Hospital, and in 1721 founded the hospital in Southwark, London, which bears his name. |
