| Chemist and physicist, born in Glasgow, W Scotland, UK. He was professor of chemistry at Glasgow (1830–7) and London (1837–55), and Master of the Mint (1855–69). One of the founders of physical chemistry, he formulated the law that the diffusion rate of gases is inversely proportional to the square root of their density (Graham's law). He also studied the properties of colloids, and devised dialysis for separating colloids from crystalloids. |
