| British soldier, whose actions helped precipitate the American Revolution, born in Firle, East Sussex, SE England, UK. He accompanied Braddock's ill-fated expedition in Pennsylvania (1754), and the successful campaign in Quebec (1759), and became Military Governor of Montreal in 1760. He was commander-in-chief of the British forces in America (1763–72), and in 1774 Governor of Massachusetts. In April 1775 he sent a force to seize arms from the colonists at Concord, and next day the skirmish at Lexington took place which began the American Revolution. After the Battle of Bunker Hill (Jun 1775) he was relieved by Howe. |
