| Trapper, guide, and Indian agent, born in Co Cavan, Ireland. He went to the USA by 1816 and served as a guide to pioneer groups in John C Frémont's second expedition (1843–4), and to military groups just prior to and during the Mexican War (1845–6). He negotiated peace treaties with the Comanche, Kiowa, and Kiowa Apache (1851–3). The Indians trusted him and called him ‘Broken Hand’. |
