| biography:
| Playwright, born in London, UK. He was a prolific writer, but only a few of his plays were printed and most of the others are now lost. His best-known works are the comedy, The Shoemaker's Holiday (1600), and The Honest Whore (1604; part II, 1630). He wrote several plays in collaboration with other Elizabethan playwrights, and was also well known as a writer of prose pamphlets giving a lively account of London life. His writings are marked by his sympathy for the poor and oppressed. During the 1630s he dropped out of notice, and nothing is known of his last years. |
