| Traveller, born in Odcombe, Somerset, SW England, UK. He entered Gloucester Hall, Oxford (1596), but left without a degree, and after the accession of King James I in 1603 became a court jester. In 1608 he set out on a journey on foot of 1975 miles through Paris, Lyon, Turin, Venice, Zürich, and Strasbourg, and in 1611 published Coryat's Crudities. A further journey to the Middle East and India was published in 1616. |
