| biography:
| Novelist and storyteller, born in Peekshill, New York, USA. He joined the Iowa Writers' Workshop in 1972, and published in 1979 his first collection of short stories, Descent of Man (St Lawrence Award for Short Fiction). His writing displays great virtuosity, and his themes are dazzlingly ingenious and often bizarrre. Later books include World's End (1988, PEN/Faulkner Award) and his satirical novel The Road to Wellville (1993), which was made into a film. T C Boyle Stories (1998) brings together 68 of his short stories. Friend of the Earth (2000) is a darkly humorous novel about the future of the planet. |
