| biography:
| Furniture-maker and designer, baptised at Otley, West Yorkshire, N England, UK. He set up a workshop in St Martin's Lane, London, UK, in 1754, in partnership with a merchant, James Rannie (d.1766). He soon became famous for his graceful Neoclassical furniture, especially chairs, which he made mostly from mahogany in the Rococo, chinoiserie, and Gothic Revival styles. The Gentleman and Cabinet-maker's Director, which he published in 1754, was the first comprehensive trade catalogue of its kind. He was succeeded by his second partner, Thomas Haig, and his son Thomas (c.1749–1822). |
