| Naval officer, born in Hanover, New Hampshire, USA. He took command of the USS Enterprise after Pearl Harbor, and fought in the Battles of the Coral Sea, Midway, and the E Solomons. As Douglas MacArthur's naval commander (1943–5) he participated in the New Guinea and Philippines operations, fought the Battle of Leyte Gulf (1944), and landed US troops in Korea in 1945. |
