| Engineer, born in Buerton, Cheshire, NWC England, UK. He was articled to a land surveyor, and in 1836 settled in London as a railway contractor. His operations soon extended to all parts of the world; for his contract of the Great Northern Railway (1847–51) he employed between 5000 and 6000 men. |
